All about building and growing an organic garden for beginners. How to choose the plants you want to grow and the size of the patch to start [...]

I’ll bet you’re wondering about that year around statement. Well I can tell you about that in just a minute.

Many people garden for flowers around the house and others garden for food and flowers while even others just have a few containers with their favorite tomatoes or herbs. The point here is that most of it is the sheer pleasure of it all.

To watch it all grow from all the work you’ve done is really amazing. There is a great satisfaction to growing it all yourself or with your partner or family. Everyone gets to get involved in the effort.

Now there are many ways to put a garden together and it doesn’t have to be hard. You can use containers as I mentioned earlier. You can use a small section next to the house or you can cut out a part of the yard and make it a designated garden. Some people go as far as making the whole yard into garden and grow pretty much all the food they need for most all of the year if not all year.

It all depends on you really. How much do you want to do. If you are just starting out maybe a small patch would be good for you so you can learn the basics and then as time passes you can increase the size.

We started out with a small 20′ X 20′ piece of the lawn and had a roto tilling service come by and get it ready for us to get started. Then the next year we expanded it and now we are expanding it again.

One of the joys of this is that our dogs also love the produce that comes from the garden. If we don’t keep them out of the garden they eat the vegies right off the plants and that can be frustrating but we know they are eating healthy. We never have to take them to the vet for being sick either.

I think my greatest pleasure from it all is that my wife has a fun hobby that she gets to share with friends and family and it makes her very happy. I get to have fresh vegetables right out of the garden and it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Gardening and home farming is an ongoing learning experience that always has something else to know so you would be hard pressed to try to know it all.

So first things first. Decide how you would like to start like containers or a small patch on the side of the house or a chunk of the yard and then decide what you would like to grow. Usually the best ones to grow are the ones you like to eat the most. Then you expand into more varieties.

My preference is to go organic and to stay away from any man made chemicals just to be safe. You can get organic compost to till into the soil to boost it’s nutrient value and it also make the soil more fluffy and easier to till each year.

As for year around gardening if you want to go that route then you will need a way to cover the beds and keep them warm. It can be freezing outside and you can be growing many different plants and eating fresh every day. It is just a matter of desire if you want to grow through the winter.

I hope this has been helpful to you. I have much more to write about so keep a lookout for more in the future.

There is no deep and esoteric science to organic fertilizer. One can find many different recipes here on the internet but you might not have the time to look around and find the one that is right for you.

I’ve done some looking around and I found a very simple and easy to make fertilizer that will give an all around good nutritional boost to your garden.

Here is a link to a site I found that has a simple recipe for you to follow.

Sometimes it’s so easy to just go to the store and buy what’s on the shelf without looking to see what’s in the ingredients of their fertilizer. You know how it can be. You just remember you need some fertilizer for the garden and you’re right there right now so it wont hurt to just get what they have. Then you no longer need to get fertilizer so you move on to the next thing.

Now you put this stuff on your plants and maybe you still aren’t thinking about what’s in it. Can you eat the produce that is grown with that fertilizer? I’ve seen some that you cannot eat when reading some labels. So your best bet is to take the time to at least read up on what your plants really need and just get them that.

Here is a basic list of what a plant needs

Balanced PH for the particular plant

Minerals

Decomposed matter for the basic nutrient compounds

Moisture

Good soil

Air and sunlight

Those are the basic things and then you can get more involved with each component. As long as you have these things in place you will be able to grow your own food with ease.

In making your own fertilizer you want to take naturally occurring ingredients and mix them in appropriate proportions to give the plant the extra boost it needs to be healthy. After all a healthy plant will fight off insects and disease far better than unhealthy plants.

Here is another link for fertilizer This one has more in depth information.

When you want to get a head start on the growing season in your area one of the best things to do is start your seedlings in the house during the winter. You will find that when you get to plant them there is far less waiting for them to produce.

We set up an area with a south facing window that is warm and gets good ventilation. You have to watch out for stagnant air so you don’t get any molding going on. Keeping an area moist with no air flow is great breeding ground for mold. So keep some sort of air flow going now and then.

It’s best to start your plants after the days begin to get longer. Plants can tell when the day light increases and they can tell as well when the day light decreases. So you want the day light to be on the increase so it makes the plant grow more.

Generally when the day light is decreasing many type of plants go into their seed producing stages. This is because they have to produce reproductive properties for the next growing season in order to continue to survive as a species.

That is the main reason we want the days to be increasing in day light. That is the plants natural growth time. If we start them indoors or in greenhouses then when the outdoor temperatures are stable and warm enough for the plants we can move them. When they get moved they are already in good growth and there is no waiting for the seeds to germinate and break through the soil.

Now the harvest of the produce is even closer because the plants are already heading to production. There is a short time after transplanting that the plants need to adjust to the move but it is far shorter than the time to wait for the seeds to come through the ground.

One more thing is to start seeds every couple of weeks so the plants are different ages. This way you will be able to harvest your vegetables on a regular basis instead of them getting ripe all at the same time. That can be a problem if you grow a lot because it’s hard to use it all in a hurry.

Do not use pesticides or herbicides in your gardens. They leach into the foods you are about to eat and the whole reason you are growing your own food is to get rid of these toxic elements from your diet. Don’t go thinking that the food producers wouldn’t sell you anything that was harmful to you because that’s exactly what’s happening to you when you buy regular produce in the grocery stores. Though it may be minute amounts of the toxins they are still there and the more you get the greater chance of illness.

Growing an organic garden isn’t a difficult task. Actually it’s an art and it was the way gardening and farming was originally done a hundred years ago and the overall health of the population was far greater. Man doesn’t know better than nature.

Organic gardening can be a lot of fun. There are so many benefits to growing your own foods. One of them is the simple pleasure of enjoying the fruits of your labor. Then another one is knowing that there aren’t any unknown chemicals on or in your food to make you ill.

Commercially grown foods are loaded with pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. How do you know those substances are actually safe to eat. Just because a company that sells the stuff to the farmer says it is safe for the consumer to eat doesn’t mean that it is true. In fact I would venture to say that those substances have a lot to do with the current amount of ill health we have in the world.

So back to organic foods and your garden. I’ve searched around and found a great page with the needed information to get you growing the best organic foods you can. Just click here

I want to teach you how to grow organic vegetables. That way you can create the joy and and well being of growing your own food. It is really easy once you learn the basics.

If you have never tried the organic vs conventional tomato taste test maybe now is a good time. The ones you buy at the store may not seem that different in taste but the ones you grow vs the ones in the store will have a distinct difference. Here is the reason why. In the store they have to pick the fruits before they are ripe to be able to get them to your house before they spoil. The ones from your own garden ripen on the vine and you get the natural full cycle of the plant to fill that tomato with flavor.

That’s simple enough to understand. So you owe it to yourself to find out what you have been missing. All fruits and vegetables in the store have to be picked before they are ripe in order for them to make it to your home and table. That leaves out a bunch of flavor and nutrients that would naturally be developed in the ripening stages.

Go download this ebook on organic gardening right now to find out everything you need to know.
