How to Choose the Best Kitchen Appliances

November 16, 2011 By: Charles Lyle Category: Kitchen Remodeling

Equipping your new or newly-remodeled kitchen with the right appliances can be an exciting and challenging task. The brands and styles and prices can make your head swirl in confusion. You should also consider your personal preferences, lifestyle, functionality and even the color of the appliance before you shell out your hard-earned money for it.

However, let’s face the fact that for most of us, budget plays a largely important factor before we can buy the appliances we want to fill our kitchen. If this describes you, there are three basic must-haves in any home kitchen that you should purchase first. These include a refrigerator, a dishwasher and a stove and oven.

As far as refrigerators are concerned, you have a plethora of choices in the market. From top-mounted to bottom-mounted to side-by-side models, these iceboxes come in all shapes and sizes. One of the most important considerations in buying a fridge is your mode of preparing food. If you cook most of the time using fresh ingredients, a bottom-mounted fridge is the best choice since it allows you to see all the ingredients with just one glance. New refrigerators have added features as well, like frost-free and icemaker options but these add-ons make this appliance more expensive so think about whether you need to have them or not.

One of the main considerations for choosing a dishwasher is the load you are going to be regularly subjecting it to. Families might want to select washers which can handle larger loads but are energy and water-efficient at the same time. However, if you live by yourself, you might want to invest in smaller ones which don’t use up a lot of energy even if you only have a handful of plates to wash.

Durability is also another consideration when choosing a dishwasher and those whose arms on the bottom are made of stainless steel are likely to last longer. You might also want to opt for a three-tiered washer if you do a lot of entertaining or have many utensils to clean.

Stoves and ovens are a natural part of any kitchen. Many conventional stoves have a cook top above and an oven below. This is still popular among many because it saves space and exhibits a warm atmosphere. But for home chefs who take cooking to the next level, more extensive models are better. These commercial-style ovens often include basting and grilling functions and have as many as eight burners!

You should also decide if you want a gas or electric range. Gas offers precision in terms of heat control and lower cost over time while electric heat are lower in price and give even heat. A good middle ground is to go for the so-called “dual fuel” ranges that give the best of both worlds with a gas cook top and an electric oven.

If you have more cash to splurge, a microwave is handy to have around the kitchen, especially if you like to prepare large batches of food early in the morning and only want to reheat them for dinner. Of course, coffee people might want to invest in a coffeemaker while fresh juice and smoothie folks will do well to have a juicer and blender around.
