Remodeling Options For Today’s Bathroom

July 31, 2010 By: Amanda Kirby Category: Bathroom Remodeling

If you compare a bathroom today with what it used to look like only a decade ago you’ll be shocked to see the changes. With new options for virtually every part of the bath, choosing to remodel the room can truly transform your home and give it a much more modern look.

Remodeling your bathroom, whether you choose traditional or newer style fixtures, can be a costly investment. But estimates are that if you sell your home after remodeling you’ll recover 70 to 90 percent of the cost, making that a good investment that you can enjoy and still see a return on.

You can change most everything in your bathroom, no matter if it’s the shower or the tub, the sink or the toilet, the lighting or the tiling. If your budget can afford it, you can redo the whole room from top to bottom, if not, you can limit yourself to changing the fixtures only.

While making plans for your renovation it would be a good idea for you to go over all your options: Would a shower tower instead of a mixer or power shower suit you best? Do you want a regular or a low-flow toilet? Do you want an under mount or a counter mount sink? Do you want to invest in some added water or heat conservation fittings that will help reduce your bills?

After examining all your options, decide where you want to start making the changes in your bathroom. When you get ready to draw up your budget, you’ll be able to eliminate the things that are further down on the list to keep your project affordable. After that you may have to rethink having flow controls on all spigots and just install them on the ones you are most likely to use more frequently.

It would be a good idea if you enlisted the help of a contractor once you know how you want your bath to look. Remodeling a bath isn’t a project you’re likely to want to tackle on your own, even if you are able fix a leaky faucet. Another thing that you need to mull over aside from the accessories, lighting and colors, is the covering of your walls and floor. Attention to healthy environments indoors and out may mean you want to select products that are recycled, renewable, or low in emissions once installed.

An experienced contractor will be able to tell you how to better make use of the space you have and what brands are best suited to satisfy your needs of looks and performance. He can also help you finalize your budget and plans and may help you find ways to afford items you thought would need to be dropped, or change priorities because the reality won’t be what you expected.

You should get used to the idea that you will have to part with several thousand dollars. Many minor renovations cost $10,000 and a more luxurious project will be even higher. As you will find out with the passing of time while rejoicing in the comforts of your new bathroom, a great part of the money you spent will be recovered.

Home Repair Projects Often Take Longer

July 30, 2010 By: Chad Dethelo Category: Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen remodeling can be the most rewarding but also the trickiest home improvement project. Do you know how to update your kitchen without breaking the bank?

The first step is planning. It is essential to plan how you want your kitchen to ultimately look. Once you have a vision, consider how much your existing kitchen differs from your plan, then write down what you need to do to make your dream come true.

Of course, any home repair project takes time and money. For example, are new cabinets in your plan? Find out how much it would cost to replace them. If you can’t afford new cabinets, perhaps you may be able to reface them instead. Refacing can give your kitchen a whole new look for a much lower cost.

Find out the costs and alternative options for each of the projects on your dream kitchen project list. Get as much detail as you can for each item, including labor and materials. Then consider what you can reasonably afford. Few people can create their dream kitchen all at once, so prioritize which projects are most important to you, then proceed accordingly. You may need to get a home improvement loan to help pay for larger projects. Try to avoid using credit cards as the interest rates will significantly boost the cost of the project.

If you don’t have the money to do a project, perhaps you should consider doing the work yourself. Doing it yourself can save you a lot of money, but you have to be sure you know what you are doing. There are many websites that give easy-to-follow instructions for many home projects. You may also take a short class at a community class or at a home improvement store to learn the skills you need.

Before you start a project yourself, there are other factors to think about. Consider that home improvement jobs can take a long time to complete, especially if you have to work around your family’s schedules. While hiring a company to do the project is expensive, the project is more likely to get it done right and on time.

One family I know attacks home improvements a little at a time. When a gift-giving occasion comes around, the husband and wife complete a new project. Rather than having another trinket that will get lost or broken they are slowly but surely building their dream kitchen.

Kitchen remodeling is important, especially as the kitchen is usually the busiest room in your house. It is important that the work done there is of the highest quality because it will have to stand up for a long time and endure a lot of traffic. If you plan carefully, you will eventually have a kitchen your friends will envy.
