One More Side Of The House To Side

November 30, 2009 By: admin Category: Home Additions

This project is looking great. I’ve been progressing around the house installing the new siding as I go and I am now on the last side. Two stories makes it a great adventure to do off of ladders. I’d use scaffolding but it isn’t in the budget and it would take longer to get done with having to set it up and take it down on each side.

That would be more than I want to do and cost more than I want to spend. A couple extension ladders with stabilizers on them and I’m set. Plus it’s really good exercise going up and down the ladders and moving them around.

Even though this project is taking longer than hiring it done I’m very pleased with it and how much I’ve actually done on it. I took a house built back in 1939 of 864 sq ft and turned it into 2500+ sq ft with two separate living spaces. We moved my mother into the original space and she is quite comfortable there with 800 sq ft. We have the new space and it’s like being in a completely new house but without the new larger mortgage.

I tell ya if you ever get the chance to do this and you want a great adventure go ahead and take on the project of adding on to your house. It is really fulfilling to get to use a space you created on an every day basis. You and everyone in the family should get involved somehow to make it all happen.

For me it sure beats the hell out of the same old grind of going to work and coming home and repeat repeat repeat the same old thing over and over again without any change. I know for some people change is rather hard to deal with but if you like change then this is a great way to get it.

Go ahead: Build something!

Cheers

Getting Close To Finishing The Addition

November 24, 2009 By: admin Category: Uncategorized

I’ve been working quite a while on getting the house just the way we want it and now I am on the tail end of the whole project.

I’ve pretty much built the entire house on my own with a little help on the framing from a friend, the roofing from another friend, (I don’t like to roof) hired the carpeting installed and I helped the foundation guy set and pour all his forms. I also hired a couple guys to tape the drywall to speed that up.

So from digging out the foundation hole all the way to the almost complete project I’d have to say I’ve been busy. Right now I am finishing up with the siding. I have the plumbing final all signed off and the mechanical final as well. There are a few little items to handle on the electrical final and just a few other items to finish up for the building final.

It is a wonderful feeling to know that I did this whole project and now we get to use what I built. I usually do the building for other people and then never get to use what I put together. So now I do.

The master bath is a dream come true with a walk in shower that is 5′ by 7′ and two separate shower controls. The hot water never runs out because we have a tankless water heater. (Nice)

We now have this huge walk in closet with wardrobe cabinetry all the way around to hold all of our clothes. (Mostly my wife’s stuff. she has way more than I do.) And the bedroom area. All total the master suite has 432 sq ft of floor space. That’s really nice.

There are a total of 5 bedrooms in our house now. Really nice to have a lot of space too.

Of course my point is simple. Investing into your living quarters and making them larger is a really good way to invest in your comfort. Doing most or all the work yourself saves you a ton of money and gives you great bragging rights.

So get out your pencil and draw up your dream. That’s where it starts. Drawing what you want gets the idea out of your head so you can see it. Start!

Cheers
